Addison’s dx
primary adrenal insufficiency caused by autoimmune destruction of adrenal glands
causes deficiency of ALL adrenal hormones
causes low cortisol, high ACTH
Adrenal hormones
glucocorticoids (cortisol)
mineralocorticoid (aldosterone)
androgens (testosterone)
Mineralocorticoid deficiency
++ loss of sodium, fluid
decreased excretion of potassium
hypotension, low cardiac output, hyperkalemia
increased salt cravings
dehydration, weakness, fatigue
cardiovascular collapse/shock
Glucocorticoid deficiency
hypoglycemia, lethargy, weakness, fever, anorexia, N/V, weight loss
Addison skin
hyperpigmentation caused by elevated ACTH
Addison’s treatment
hormone replacement (hydrocortisone, prednisone)
increased protein/carbs (low appetite)
increased fluids
wear a medical bracelet
Addison S/S
hyperpigmentation
hypoglycemia
low appetite
little pubic/axillary hair
hypotension, dizziness, fatigue
cardiac insufficiency
salt cravings
low mood/depression
muscle weakness
