Q

General info on Corticotropin

A

Q

Somatropin works by

A

-Stimulates Tissue building processes
*Increases size & number of muscle cells
*Increases size of internal organs
(Not brain or eyes)
-Stimulates Bone growth in length
-Releases more glucose

16
Q

Somatropin expected Therapeutic Response

A

Increased growth

Stop treatment prior to epiphyseal plate closure

17
Q

Nursing implications for growth hormones

A
Document growth (height, weight), motor skills
Monitor blood glucose, thyroid function, gallbladder function
18
Q

Posterior Pituitary Hormones are

A

Oxytocin & Antidiuretic hormone (ADH)

19
Q

Functions of Oxytocin

A

Stimulates contraction of uterine smooth muscle
Stimulates ejection of milk
Plays a role in mother’s attachment to infant

20
Q

Functions of Antidiuretic hormone (ADH)

A

Promotes renal conservation of water
Acts on collecting ducts of kidney to increase their permeability to water  Increased water reabsorption
Stimulates contraction of vascular and GI tract smooth muscle
Vasoconstriction results
Stimulated by high osmolality, hypotension, reduced plasma volume

21
Q

ADH drug effects

A

Mimic actions of antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
Increase water resorption & concentrate urine
Reduce water excretion up to 90%

22
Q

ADH Prototype Drugs

A

Vasopressin, Desmopressin (DDAVP)

23
Q

Vasopressin general info and uses

A
Potent vasoconstrictor (higher doses)
Used for hypotensive emergencies (septic shock)
Treatment of GI bleeds(vasoconstruction)
24
Q

Desmopressin general info

A

Can be given IV, SC, PO, Intranasal
Really slows down urine
Less vasoconstriction

25
Q

Desmopressin Indications

A
  • Nocturnal enuresis
  • Diabetes Insipidus
  • Deficiency of ADH characterized by excessive thirst (polydipsia) and excretion of large volumes of dilute urine
  • Caused by inherited factors, head trauma, cancer, neurosurgery
26
Q

Vasopressin adverse effects

A
  • Excessive vasoconstriction causing Angina and possibly MI

- Headache

27
Q

Desmopressin adverse effects

A

Water intoxication

-Drowsiness, listlessness, headache

28
Q

Vasopressin, Desmopressin nursing implications

A

Monitor:

  • Vital Signs (especially BP)
  • Weight
  • Intake and Output, especially urine output
  • Urine Specific Gravity(concentration) water is 1-pure the higher the concentration, the #
29
Q

Therapeutic response for Vasopressin

A

Increased blood pressure

30
Q

Therapeutic response for Desmopressin

A

Decreased thirst
Decreased urinary output
Decreased bleeding
