Q

What is stress hyperglycemia?

A

Transient elevation in blood glucose by metabolic stress in patients without preexisting diabetes

Due to cortisol, catecholamines (epinephrine, norepinephrine) acting on liver –> glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis

Only very high elevations (>180-200) should be corrected with short-acting insulin
