endocrine Flashcards
define homeostasis:
the bodys way of maintaining a stable internal environment
what are set points within the body?
fixed values or ranges that the body tries to maintain for a physiological parameter
what are reference ranges?
normal or acceptable ranges of values for a physiological parameter
Define the Endocrine system:
collection of glands that secrete hormones into bloodstream to regulate and coordinate various functions.
what are the different mechanisms of intercellular communication and how do they differ?
Endocrine communication, transmitted through blood.
Synaptic communication, transmitted across synapses
one primary function of endocrine system:
helps maintain homeostasis
Physiological variables maintained by endocrine system:
blood sugar concentration, growth and repair , basal metabolic rate and blood calcium concentration
examples of water soluble hormones:
peptide hormones and catecholamines
examples of lipid soluble hormones:
steroid hormones and thyroid hormones
what is the pancreas made of?
an exocrine gland and endocrine gland
where is insulin secreted from ? and its function
Secreted from pancreatic beta islet cells, stored glucose as glycogen
where is glucagon secreted from? and its function
secreted from pancreatic alpha islet cells, release of stored glucose
TRUE OR FALSE : lipid soluble hormone receptors are located in the located or nucleus
TRUE
TRUE OR FALSE: water soluble hormones cannot cross the cell membrane
True
where are water soluble hormone receptors located?
located in the target plasma membrane
