Endo & Exocrine Glands Flashcards
Describe Serous cells.
Basally placed round nucleus, cytoplasm has reddish granules which contain secretory products of the cell.
Describe Mucus cells.
Flay nucleus pressed to the outside.
Describe Intercalated ducts
Formed by cuboidal epithelium. Add bicarbonate ions to saliva (buffer) and absorb Cl. Give watery secretion.
Describe Striated ducts.
Formed by columnar cells, centrally placed nucleus. Striations from folding in the cytoplasm where mitochondria live. This allows the cell to secrete K and antibodies and absorb Na. Have short microvilli.
Parotid gland
Secretes alpha-amylase. The first step in digesting starch. Produces 30% of total saliva.
Sunlingual gland
Made of mucous acini with serous demilunes - produces mixed saliva. Produces 5% of total saliva.
Location and function of Myoepithelial cells
Sublingual gland, around the serous and mucus acini. Contractions facilitate the secretion process.
Submandibular gland
Produces 60% of total saliva, 90% serous and 10% mucus.
