Define waves.
A wave is an oscillation that moves through space transferring energy from one place to another.
What is a mechanical waves?
Mechanical waves require a medium/ transmitted through a matter or substance
What is an electromagnetic wave?
Electromagnetic waves can travel through matter and empty space (vacuum)
How do waves transfer energy?
Waves transfer energy without a transfer of matter.
What is the motion of particles in transverse waves?
Waves go from side to side. Energy is travelling in one direction, with the vibration moving at a 90 degrees angle to the direction the wave is travelling.
Define wavelength
The distance from one point on a wave to the same point on the next wave
What is the motion of particles in longtitudinal waves?
Longitudinal waves vibrate moving in the same direction that the wave is travelling in. Causes particles of matter to move back and forth in same direction in which the wave travels.
Define amplitude
The maximum displacement of a particle from its undisturbed position
Define frequency.
Frequency is the number of wave cycles per second.
Define period.
The time taken for one complete wave cycle.
What are sound waves.
-Sound waves are mechanical waves that require a medium to travel.
-They are longitudinal waves made up of compressions and rarefactions.
-Sound waves can be reflected which is used in SONAR
-speed of sound differs depending on the medium it travels through
How are amplitude and loudness related?
The larger the amplitude, the louder the sound wave. The smaller the amplitude, the quieter the sound wave.
What are electromagnetic spectrum
Electromagnetic spectrum includes gamma rays, x-rays, radio waves, microwave, infra-red and ultraviolet.
What are isotopes.
Isotopes are atoms that have more or fewer neutrons
What can isotopes release?
Release alpha, beta or gamma radiation
