End of Year Revision Flashcards
What is the theory of evolution?
Species we see on earth have gradually developed over millions of years
What process do animals evolve through
Natural selection
What is natural selection
How organisms change slowly over time to adapt better to their environment.
What is the order of the process do natural selection go on
organisms in a species show variation
Organisms with the best characteristics survive and reproduce. Organisms with the worst characteristics die out, this is called survival of the fittest
Genes are passed on from the parents to the offspring in the next generation so offspring also posses the favourable characteristics.
Who founded the theory of natural selection
Charles Darwin
How did Darwin come up with this theory.
He noticed that finches of different islands had different characteristics to fit better with their environment
Is metal a good conductor and why?
Metal is a good conductor because it contains electrons that are free to move
What are the three different pathways that energy can be transferred.
Conduction, convection, radiation.
How does conduction occur
Particles transfer energy by colliding with one another particles when they vibrate.
How does convection occur?
Convection occurs when particles with a lot of heat energy in a liquid or gas move and take the place of particles with less heat energy
When will energy transfer stop?
When the two surfaces are the same temperature.
What is the palisade layer on a leaf?
Contains cells packed with chloroplasts. This is where most photosynthesis occurs.
What is the spongy layer of the leaf?
Contains air spaces, allowing carbon dioxide to diffuse throughout the leaf and oxygen diffuse out of the leaf.
