End Of Year Revision Flashcards
Define the term ionic bond
Electrostatic forces of attraction between two oppositely charged ions
Why will magnesium oxide conduct electricity when molten or dissolved but not when it’s a solid?
The ions are not free to move in a solid so cannot conduct electricity but if molten or dissolved ions are free to move so can conduct electricity
Define the term acid
Chemicals that break apart in water, releasing H+ ions
Calcium + Hydrochloric acid —> …
Calcium hydroxide + Hydrogen
What is the test for oxygen?
Place a glowing splint into the gas, if oxygen is released the splint will relight
What is the chemical test for water?
Add anhydrous copper (II) sulphate to the reaction, if it turns blue, water is present
Explain why copper (II) hydroxide cannot be classed as an alkali
It’s not soluble in water
What would be observed when sulphur is reacted with oxygen to form sulphur dioxide?
A blue flame
Why does sulphur dioxide form an acidic solution when dissolved in water?
It’s a non-metal oxide
What name is given to the group 1 elements?
Alkali metals
What colour is the flame when a small piece of potassium is dropped into water?
Lilac
Why is potassium more reactive than sodium?
-Potassium has more shells than sodium
-Outer electrons further away from positive nucleus
-Weaker attraction between the nucleus and outer electron makes it easier to remove the electron
What is meant by the term “Redox Reaction”
A reaction in which both oxidation and reduction occur
Why does putting a piece of copper metal into a solution of zinc nitrate not form copper (II) nitrate?
Copper is less reactive than zinc, so will be unable to displace zinc from the zinc nitrate
