End of week questions Flashcards
Whats an agonist?
Ligand binds to active site of the receptor and activates the cell
Whats a noncompetitive antagonist?
ligand binds to receptor at an allosteric site (non- active site), thus, changing the conformation of the active receptor site, making it impossible for the agonist to bind at its active site.
Whats a prodrug?
precursor to active drug so that when the prodrug is metabolized by the liver, the drug is now active.
What is the difference between efficacy and potency?
Efficacy: The maximum effect a drug will produce
Potency: How much drug is required to induce desired effect.
Absorption changes in the elderly?
2
Increase gastric pH
Delayed gastric emptying
What are the effect of these changes?
Decrease absorption rate of drugs with a lower pka
Drugs with a more basic pka will take longer to be absorbed
GABA causes the release of what?
dopamine
causing euphoria
endogenous opioids blocks the transmission of the action potential. What specifically does it block?
calcium channels
