end of the universe Flashcards
speed of universe’s expansion
accelerating
two forces acting on galaxies
- gravity
- universal expansion
proof of dark matter
most galaxies appear to contain far less mass than they actually do, which can be seen from their movements under gravity
- therefore unknown, undetectable matter is spread throughout the universe, only detected through gravity
big freeze
universe continues to grow and expand at the same accelerated rate forever
- energy is spread too far out and temperature drops to absolute zero
- nothing will ever happen again
- heat death of the universe
big rip
if there is enough dark energy, the universal acceleration rate will increase over time
- positive jerk(rate of acceleration) = expansion becomes too fast for matter to stay together
- eventually space-time will fall apart and the expansion rate becomes infinite
big crunch
the universe’s expansion slows down and ultimately contracts and pushed everything in the universe together
- reversal of the big bang into a singularity
big bounce
singularity created by the big crunch will re-explode into another big bang
- cycle goes on indefinitely
steady state
dark energy + gravity will reach equilibrium
- universe reached max size and stops expanding
- though very unlikely
