Policies of Gorbachev
Glasnost; Openness, freedom for debate and media and the government has less control
Perestroika; Restructuring the Soviet economy through the introduction of more western style policies
Role of President Reagan
Initially he was very against the USSR but later changed policies from rollback to diplomacy and negotiated the Intermediate Nuclear Forces Treaty (a reduction in nuclear arms on both sides)
Collapse of communism
Gorbachev gave other Iron Curtain countries more freedom to the point they were able to break free of communism with no resistance. The Berlin Wall also collapsed on 9 November 1989
Cold War ends
Russia’s economy couldn’t sustain the Cold War as they were behind the US by decades in terms of technology so Gorbachev had to reduce military spending and improve relations
