Cooperation Ends Flashcards
Yalta
On Feb 1945 Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin met at Yalta in Ukraine. It was clear they would win WW2 so they met to decide what would happen to post-war Europe
Churchill wanted to ensure the survival of the British Empire however he also saw the USSR as a danger to the West that had to be stopped
Roosevelt was not so keen on the revival of the British Empire. He wanted the USSR to join the UN and was prepared to work with Stalin
Stalin sought the creation of a buffer zone between Western Europe and the USSR as a way of protecting the USSR from attack. To ensure that the countries making up this zone would be friendly towards the USSR, Stalin wanted them to be controlled by communist governments
Potsdam
Potsdam was a second meeting that happened after the war on July 1945
Roosevelt had been replaced by Truman who did not like Stalin and Churchill was replaced by Clement Attlee. US and British attitudes towards the USSR were hardening as they watched Germany being stripped of resources and saw puppet governments being set up in several of the countries in Eastern Europe now under Soviet control
