END FEELS Flashcards
IDENTIFY THE END FEEL: occurs when muscle bulk is compressed (ex: elbow flexion is stopped by the contact of the forearm and the arm)
(normal end feel) soft end feel
IDENTIFY THE END FEEL: results from tension in the surrounding ligaments, capsule, and/or muscles and is perceived as a firm stop to the motion and only a “slight give” on overpressure (ex: shoulder internal/external rotation, hip and knee extension)
(normal end feel) firm end feel
IDENTIFY THE END FEEL: characterized by a hard and abrupt limit to passive joint motion with no give on overpressure… occurs when bone contacts bone at the end of the ROM (ex: elbow extension when the olecranon process contacts the olecranon fossa)
(normal end feel) hard end feel
IDENTIFY THE END FEEL: often found in acute(recent) conditions in which soft tissue edema (swelling) is present… has a soft “wet sponge” feel
(abnormal end feel) boggy end feel
IDENTIFY THE END FEEL: reflexive guarding during motion *protective response in acute injuries *found upon palpation of mm *palpation is a necessary component to protect the joint during ROM exercises
(abnormal end feel) muscle spasm
IDENTIFY THE END FEEL: occurs when movement produces considerable pain and the patient stops the clinician from moving the joint beyond the painful point *clinician cannot determine the normal end feel due to this
(abnormal end feel) empty end feel
IDENTIFY THE END FEEL: a rebound movement is felt at the end of the range of motion *usually occurs with a torn cartilage
(abnormal end feel) springy block
Describe a normal end feel
full PROM at the joint and the motion is limited by the expected anatomical structure (bone, capsule, muscle, and ligament)
Describe an abnormal end feel
this may present with pain, muscle guarding, swelling, or abnormal anatomy that stops the joint movement
