End feels Flashcards
Normal - Hard
A painless, abrupt, hard stop to movement when bone contacts bone
Normal - Soft
Soft tissue approximation - when two body surfaces come together a soft compression of tissue is felt
Normal - firm muscular
A firm or springy sensation that has some give when muscle is stretched
Normal - firm capsular
A hard arrest to movement with some give when the joint capsule or ligaments are stretched - similar to stretching a piece of leather
Abnormal - hard
An abrupt hard stop to movement earlier in range or not expected
What can cause an abnormal hard end feel?
Joint that contains loose bodies Degenerative joint disease Dislocation Fracture Heterotopic ossification
Abnormal - soft & causes
A boggy sensation that indicates the presence of synovitis or soft tissue edema, or skin adhesion and/or scar tissue restricting ROM
Abnormal - medium end feel & causes
Myofascial EF: myofascial tissues are restricting the ROM
Abnormal - firm & causes
A springing sensation or hard arrest to movement with some give
Muscular, capsular, or ligamentous shortening
Muscular hypertonicity arrests ROM - can be increased w/inhibition techniques
Abnormal - springing block & causes
A rebound is seen or felt & indicates the presence of internal derangement
Abnormal - empty
If considerable pain is present, there is no sensation felt before the extreme of passive ROM as the Pt requests the movements to be stopped
What causes an empty end feel
Pain indicative of
Extra-articular abscess, a neoplasm, acute bursitis, joint inflammation or a fracture
Abnormal - spasm
A hard sudden stop to passive movement that is often accompanied by pain
What causes spasm end feel?
Indicative of:
acute or subacute arthritis
Presence of severe active lesion
Fracture
w/o pain could be CNS lesion & increased muscular tone
