Emulsions Flashcards
1
Q
What are emulsions?
A
Liquid prep; oil and water (two liquid phases, one dispersed throughout the other- homogenous dispersion)
2
Q
Classification?
A
Usually based on the nature of the hydrophilic group
3
Q
What are the Anionic surfactant advantages and disadvantages?
A
Advantages;
-cost, low availability and biodegradable
Disadvantages;
-precipitation in Ca2+, Mg3+ ions
-avoid precipitation; carboxylates modified with hydrophilic groups
4
Q
What is the cationic surfactant?
A
-most common are quaternary ammonium compounds
-cationic materials= irritant to skin
