Emotional Deprivation
Expects that others will either never or not adequately meet primary emotional needs for support:
Primary needs for nurturance, empathy, and protection.
Feels isolated and lonely.
Abandonment
Expects that significant others will eventually abandon him.
Expects that others are unreliable and unpredictable in their support and connection.
Feels abandoned, switching between feelings of anxiety, grief, and anger.
Mistrust and/or Abuse
Convinced that others will intentionally abuse in some way or that they will cheat or humiliate.
These feelings vary greatly and the patient is continuously on edge.
Social Isolation/ Alienation
Believes is not part of any community.
Feels isolated from the world.
Defectiveness/ Shame
Believes is socially inept and physically unattractive.
Sees self as boring, dull, and ugly.
Feels defective, shameful
Failure
Believes is incapable of performing as well as peer group.
Feels stupid and untalented.
Dependence/ Incompetence
Believes extremely helpless and incapable of functioning independently.
Believes incapable of making day-to day decisions
Feels often tense and anxious.
Vulnerability to Harm and Illness
Believes that imminent catastrophe will strike self and/or significant others
Believes that he is unable to prevent this.
Feels anxious, dread.
Enmeshment/ Undeveloped Self
Has excessive emotional involvement and closeness with one or more significant others (often parents),
As a result cannot develop his own identity.
Subjugation
Submits to the control of others in order to avoid negative consequences.
Ignores own needs.
Fearful of conflict and punishment.
Self-Sacrifice
Focuses on meeting the needs of others, where considers weaker than himself.
If pays attention to his own needs, feels guilty.
Gives priority to the needs of others.
Finally, becomes annoyed with the people is looking after.
Approval Seeking
Focuses excessively on gaining recognition, approval, and attention, at expense of own development and needs.
Emotional Inhibition
Inhibits emotions and impulses due to belief that
any expression of feelings will harm others or lead to embarrassment, retaliation, or abandonment.
Lacks spontaneity and stresses rationality.
Unrelenting Standards/ Hypercritical
Believes that whatever does is not good enough and that must always strive harder.
Is hypercritical of self and others,
Is perfectionist, rigid, and extremely efficient.
Behaviour is at the expense of pleasure, relaxation, and social contacts.
Negativity and Pessimism
Always focused on the negative aspects of life and ignores or plays down the positive aspects.
Experiences anxiety and hyper-vigilance.
