Define Trade Union
Trade unions are organisations which supports and represent employees
Describe the role of a trade union
Employees pay an annual subscription fee which enables them to have the trade union to negotiate on their behalf.
Trade unions operate a system called collective bargaining power
Discuss the aims of a trade union
To advance the interest of their workers
To achieve the best working condition for their members
Negotiate pay deals for their members
Provide members with legal and financial advice
Define ACAS
This is a government- funded organisation which attempts to solve disputes in the workplace to stop them going to court
Discuss the role of ACAS
Aims to improve relations between employers and workers
ACAS often ends up as an arbitrator in such disputes. This means they assess the dispute and come to an independent resolution which the employers and workers decide to agree with.
ACAS can also provide information, advice and training to organisations to help improve employee relations and to stop issues arising
Discuss the benefits of Arbitration by ACAS
Avoids matters going to court, which can be costly, take up many hours of work time and be stressful for both parties
