EMPERICAL FORMULA AND MOLECULAR FORMULA Flashcards
CHEMICAL FORMULA THAT SHOWS THE NUMBER OF ATOMS OF EACH ELEMENT IN A MOLECULE.
MOLECULAR FORMULA
CHEMICAL FORMULA SHOWING THE SIMPLEST RATIO OF ELEMENTS IN A COMPOUND RATHER THAN THE TOTAL ATOMS IN THE MOLECULES
EMPERICAL FORMULA
SOLVING FOR THE EMPERICAL FORMULA OF COMPOUND.
1ST STEP: (MASS) DETERMINE THE MASS OF EACH ELEMENT PRESENT
2ND STEP: (MOL) SOLVE FOR THE NUMBER OF MOLS OF EACH ELEMENT
No. of MOL = mass (g) / atomic mass (g/mol)
3rd step: (MOLE RATIO) DETERMINE WHICH HAS THE SMALLEST MOL VALUE AND DIVIDE THE
MOL VALUE OF OTHER ELEMENTS BY IT.
4TH STEP: THE RESULTS SHALL BE THE SUBSCRIPT OF EACH OF ITS RESPECTIVE ELEMENT
5TH STEP: SUBSCRIPTS SHOULD BE A WHOLE NUMBER, MULTIPLY ALL THE SUBSCRIPTS WITH THE SMALLEST FACTOR TO TURN ALL SUBSCRIPTS TO WHOLE NUMBER.
6TH STEP: FORMULATE THE EMPERICAL FORMULA….
SOLVING FOR THE MOLECULAR FORMULA
EMPERICAL FORMULA/MOLAR MASS/FORMULA UNITS/MOLECULAR FORMULA
1ST STEP: DETERMINE THE EMPERICAL FORMULA OF THE COMPOUND
2ND STEP: SOLVE FOR THE MOLAR MASS OF THE EMPERICAL FORMULA.
3RD STEP: DIVIDE THE MOLAR MASS OF THE MOLECULAR FORMULA BY THE MOLAR MASS
OF THE EMPERICAL FORMULA.
4TH STEP: MULTIPLY THE FACTOR TO THE SUBSCRIPT OF THE ELEMENTS OF THE EMPERICAL FORUMULA
5TH STEP: RESULT!!!
