Learned behaviour:
Our understandings of appropriate ways to deal with emotion are informed by cultural and social contexts.

Innate/materialistic approach:
Believes emotions are “material” things.
- universal and adaptive (adapt to environment)
- influenced by culture, but individuals mainly “cope with emotions”.
Constructed emotions:
Emotions are not hard wired, universal, or automatic reactions to the world.
- they are concepts through which the brain perceives and predicts.
- the concept and/or labels of emotions allow our brain to comprehend the world.
- emotions are concepts used to interpret bodily reactions.

We need them to make sense of the world, if we do not believe they are innate you are unable to perceive what you believe.
