What are the 7 characteristics of emotions?
A
- Emotions are complex: usually consist of several parts or reactions happening simultaneously
- Emotions are authentic: they are automatic, involuntary reactions
- Emotions cannot be changed directly: we can change the events that cause an emotion, but we can’t use willpower to stop an emotion or to make ourselves feel an emotion
- Emotions are sudden and they rise and fall: most only last from seconds to minutes
- Emotions are self-perpetuating: emotions love themselves, they sensitize you to events associated with that emotion
- Emotions have components: all interrelated, can change at various points
- Some emotions are universal (roughly 10-12 universal basic emotions that are biologically wired for, other emotions are learned and usually a combination of the basic emotions
