Emotion, Motivation, and Stress Unit Study Guide Flashcards
What 3 components make up emotion?
1.) Physiological Arousal - Ex: Heartrate up
2.) Expressive Behaviors
3.) Conscious Experience - Thoughts and feelings
James-Lange Theory
Arousal comes before emotion. Emotion follows how the body feels
(Ex: We feel sorry because we cry)
Cannon-Bard Theory
Arousal and Emotion are separate, but occur simultaneously.
(Ex: Heart pounding at the same time I experience fear)
Schachter & Singer Two-Factor Theory
To experience emotion, one must be physically aroused and can cognitively label the arousal.
(We will feel more emotion after getting a longed-for job after a run, rather than if we just got up from a nap)
Spillover Effect
Tendency of Emotions from one person to affect others around them
Zanjonc’s Theory
Arousal is enhanced through the perception of others.
(Ex: Riots after a soccer game might make you more mad than you actually are)
LeDoux’s Theory
Emotions could bypass certain mental processes
Lazarus’ Theory
Cognitive Appraisal sometimes without our awareness, defines emotion
Explain how the branches of the autonomic nervous system work to produce emotion
