Emotion Flashcards
What is emotion made of?
Feeling
Cognition
Action
What does the autonomic NS do?
Conveys sensory info to the rest of the brain
Stimulates reflex actions
Largely unconscious
Whats the James-Lange theory?
People with paralysis still report emotions but people with autonomic failure report less intense emotion
Induced smiling, frowning etc
What did Panksepp find?
Emotion systems are sub cordial and ancient, shared with other animals
What’s does the limbic system do?
Crucial to emotion and motivation
- sensory input
- emotional responses to pain
- regulates behaviours
Is the brain lateralised for emotion?
Left hemisphere relates to the behavioural activation system
- low/moderate arousal
- happiness and anger
- left frontal and temporal lobes
Right hemisphere relates to behavioural inhibition system
- increased attention and arousal
- disgust and fear
- right frontal and temporal lobes
What’s the function of emotion?
Survival responses
Autonomic activity (increase HR) alerts you to problem before it is consciously registered
What causes aggression?
May be genetic component
- monozygotic twins resemble each other more than dizygotic twin in bad behaviour
- smoking during pregnancy
- higher levels of testosterone
Serotonin and aggression?
Low serotonin = higher aggression
Monkeys with lowest serotonin were more aggressive
