Emotion Flashcards
Define emotion
Positive or negative experiences that linked with particular pattern of physiological activity.
What are the components of emotion
1)physiological
-how body reacts
2)behaviour
-how we response
3)cognitive
-interpret events that triggers emotion
What are the type of emotion
1) positive
i)high positive (excited)
ii)low positive (calm)
2)negative
i)high negative (anger)
ii)low negative (sad)
State 4 type of theory of emotions
1) James-Lange theory of emotion
2) cannon-bard theory
3) cognitive theory of emotions
4) opponent process theory
Explain James-Lange theory of emotion
physiological reaction comes first and form basis of emotion experience.
Cortex->thalamus->limbic system->bodily reaction
Explain Cannon-Bard theory
Suggests that external stimulation triggers physical and emotional responses simultaneously yet independently.
Physiological (limbic system)
Emotion (cortex)
Explain cognitive theory of emotions
brain first appraises a situation, and resulting response in an emotion.
1)stimulus
2)followed by thought
3)which then leads to the simultaneous experience of a physiological response and the emotion
Explain opponent process theory
When a stimulus is exposed repeatedly primary feelings fade and secondary feelings become stronger. It is a attempt by NS to return to equilibrium.
What is behavioural health
Connection btw behaviours in health & well-being of body, mind and spirit.
Factors that affect emotions
-life event
-frustration
-conflict
-environmental conditions
-pressure
What is the physiology of a lie detector
-polygraph has sensors that record physiological responses
-fear increases activation of sympathetic nervous system leads to increase in physiological response
i)breathing rate
ii)blood pressure & heart rate
iii)perspiration
What are the 2 theories that explain human aggression
1)freud’s instinct theory
2)frustration-aggression theory
Explain freud’s instinct theory and how to cope with it.
Aggression caused by inborn aggressive instincts. The way to cope with it is by finding nonviolent way to release aggressive energy.
Exp
Catharsis
-purification & cleansing that brings out spiritual renewal/release from tension
(Meditation)
Explain frustration-aggression theory
Caused when one experience failure/blockage of goal and they act violently when their degree pf frustration is higher.
