Emitting and Absorbing EM Radiation Flashcards
What is intensity?
Power per unit area. Power is energy transferred per second.
What happens when the temperature of an object increases?
The intensity of every emitted wavelength increases.
Which wavelength size does intensity increase more rapidly for? Causes what?
Shorter wavelengths. Causes peak wavelength to decrease.
How does an object heat up?
If the average power the object absorbs is more than the average power it radiates.
How does an object cool down?
If the average power the object radiates is larger than the average power it absorbs.
What happens if an object is at a constant temperature?
It radiates and absorbs the same average power.
What does the overall temperature of earth depend on?
The amount of radiation reflected, absorbed and emitted.
