EMG Biofeedback Flashcards
What is the purpose of the “ground” electrode?
Point of reference
Helps differentiate between useful and meaningless information
What does EMG measure?
Amount of electrical activity in skeletal muscle
Why is EMG better than filming a patient while doing an exercise?
Immediate feedback allows for better correction for patient
What are the direct physiological effects of EMG biofeedback?
There are no direct physiological effects
What are the indirect physiological effects of EMG biofeedback?
Muscle reeducation
Pain reduction
What is no measured by EMG?
Force of contraction
What are the 3 types of feedback provided by EMG?
Auditory
Visual
Tactile
What is the purpose of setting threshold “above” when using EMG?
When you are trying to decrease activation of a muscle
What is a non-EMG form of visual biofeedback?
Having a patient complete an exercise in front of a mirror
What is the threshold percentage set given the following scenario - day 1 of decreasing spasm with a C-Spine injury?
80% - start high and gradually decrease percentage
What are the goals of Biofeedback?
Monitor physiological processes
Objectively measure physiological processes
Convert monitored effect of feedback, which will bring about desired effect
What is necessary to physically prepare the patient?
Shave Rx area Clean Rx area with alcohol Abrade treatment area Apply conducting medium if necessary Attach electrodes over belly of muscle Adjust output for desired affect Instruct patient on activity - remove distractions
What are the indications for EMG?
PFPS ACL/PCL reconstruction Weak VMO Post-surgery atrophy Impingement syndrome
What are the precautions for EMG?
Do not exceed allowable ROM limits
What are the contraindications for EMG?
Any conditions where muscle activity will increase injury or damage repaired tissues
