Emerging Powers Flashcards
define emerging powers
emerging powers are states that are considered to be rising, primarily in economic power and influence
the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) states are frequently recognised as emerging powers, but there is considerable debate over whether such powers have transformed the world order or not
arguments suggesting that emerging powers have transformed the world order
many argue that the world is now much more multipolar due to emerging powers, who are rising in military, economic and cultural power and challenging that of the USA, the supposed hegemon
arguments suggesting that emerging powers have NOT transformed the world order
it can be argued that the world order has not been transformed by emerging powers because the USA is still the global hegemon, far exceeding in terms of economic, cultural and military power
conclusion
overall, while emerging powers have influenced the world order, they have not yet fully transformed it as the world is still very much unipolar
