Definition of Emergency Supply (5 points)
In an emergency and under certain conditions
a pharmacist working in a registered pharmacy
can supply POMs to a patient without a prescription
if requested by a prescriber or a patient
Name the two types of emergency supply
1) Patient
2) Prescriber
Prescribers who can request and emergency supply
1) Doctor
2) Dentist
3) Supplementary prescriber (prescribe under their field)
4) Community practitioner nurse prescriber
5) Independent prescribers (nurse, optometrist, pharmacist, physiotherapist, podiatrist)
6) EEA or Swiss health care professionals
Emergency supply at prescribers request, pharmacist must be satisfied that (4):
1) APPROPRIATE PRESCRIBER makes request (registered in UK, EEA/Switzerland)
2) EMERGENCY- genuine reason that prescription cannot be supplied immediately
3) 72 HOURS- promised to supply prescription
4) DIRECTIONS- med supplied according to directions provided by prescriber
PRESCRIBERS REQUEST, Record in POM register must state (6):
1) Date POM supplied
2) Name, form, strength, quantity of medicine supplied
3) Name & Address of Prescriber requesting
4) Name & Address of Patient recieving
5) DATE ON PRESCRIPTION
6) DATE PRESCRIPTION IS RECEIVED
Emergency supply at Patients request, pharmacist must INTERVIEW the patient and be satisfied that (3)
1) EMERGENCY: immediate need) for POM & impractical to obtain RX without undue delay
2) PREVIOUSLY PRESCRIBED by UK prescriber/ or EEA/Swiss health care professional
3) Dose is appropriate for the patient under that circumstance
patients request: POM is 30 days except for…(3):
1) Insulin, ointments, creams, inhaler (asthma)- smallest pack
2) oral contraceptive- full cycle
3) Liquid ABX- smallest quantity to complete full course
Patients request: Record in POM register must include (4)
three the same as prescribers request
1) Date POM supplied
2) Name, form, strength, quantity of medicine supplied
3) Name & Address of Patient receiving
4) Nature of emergency…. (why need POM & why no RX?)
Emergency supply at patients request, pandemic,
one thing you need to do and one thing you dont need to do (3)
1) make sure treatment has been previously prescribed by an appropriate practitioner with an appropriate dose
2) dont need to interview
