Selected as soon as possible when trouble strikes
Set ELT to 406 MHz
ICAO defines distress as
Condition of being threatened by serious and or imminent danger and of requiring immediate assistance.
ICAO defines urgency as
Condition concerning the safety of the aircraft, or other vehicle, or of some person on board or within sight, which does not require immediate assistance
Outline mayday
Absolute priority over all others. Distress call should force everyone else into instant radio silence.
Typical mayday situations
total engine failure.
Fire/smoke in any part of aircraft.
Any structural failure that threatens safety of the flight.
Total pilot incapacitation where caller is not qualified or capable to continue flying safely.
Any other situation when threatened with grave or immediate danger and require immediate assistance.
Where to broadcast mayday
Transmit over air-ground fq currently on.
If in MBZ or CFZ, pilots discretion to stay on particular fq or change to ATS fq.
If no response, change another known ATS fq, or 121.5 (international emergency fq), broadcast on fq considered appropriate.

Mayday Mayday Mayday.
Name of station addressed.
Aircraft callsign.
Nature of distress condition.
Intentions.
Position altitude and heading.
Termination of distress communication and radio silence
When pilot in comment considers emergency is no longer present, message must be transmitted to station controlling distress traffic ending distress. Controlling station will transmit DISTRESS TRAFFIC ENDED
Transponder 770 returned to code advised by ATC.
ELT returned to armed
Situations for PAN call
Experiencing navigational difficulties and require assistance.
Aircraft malfunction that does not require immediate assistance eg open door, low oil pressure.
Severe turbulence injuries passengers or crew, assistance required upon landing.
Emergency decent in controlled airspace - traffic bellow may be threatened
Where to broadcast pan pan
Transmit over air-ground fq currently on.
If in MBZ or CFZ, pilots discretion to stay on particular fq or change to ATS fq.
If no response, change another known ATS fq, or 121.5 (international emergency fq), broadcast on fq considered appropriate.
SQK 7700 if to upgrade to distress situation, hence ELT on

Upon activation, distinct undulating signal on international distress fq 121.5.
Pulse on 406 MHz every 50 seconds - national rescue coordination centre RCCNZ
406 ELT antenna
Connected to approx half metering tip or rod areal. Normally top of fuse near tail
ELT self testing
Restricted to first 5 minutes of the hour.
Set to arm. Listen to 121.5
Set ELT on, listen for 3 siren sweeps, return ELT to arm.
