Q

Engine Fire During Start

A

Fire before engine start:
mixture idle cut-off and open the throttle and crank the engine

Engine started: continue operating

Last for more than a few seconds: use best possible external means, fuel selector valves OFF and idle cut-off mixture

Q

Engine Power Loss During Takeoff

A

sufficient runway, then land straight ahead
insufficient runway: maintain a safe airspeed and make only shallow turns, avoid obstacles
sufficient altitude to attempt a restart: maintain a safe airspeed, electric fuel pump on, ensure fuel in tank, mixture rich, carb heat on

Q

Engine Power Loss in Flight

A
Maintain 76 KIAS
Attempt restart (fuel selector, mixture, Carb heat on, electric fuel pump on, primer locked)

Cycle magnetos, L - R - Both, move throttle and mixture to different settings

Q

Power of Landing

A

Best glide 76 KIAS, air con off, find suitable field

Aim for 1000 feet above the field at downwind

Flaps as desired

when committed to landing, close the throttle and shut off master and ignition

tighten shoulder harnesses

touchdown at lowest possible speed

Q

Fire In Flight

A

Electrical: master switch to off, open cabin vents, cabin heat off, land as soon as possible

Engine: fuel selector to off, close the throttle, mixture idle cut-off, electric fuel pump off. heater and defroster off. if radio comms are not needed, master switch off. train permitting, land immediately

Q

alternator failure

A

reduce electrical load, check alternator circuit breaker, move alt switch to OFF for a second, then back to on

if continues, turn OFF the alt switch, maintain reduced electrical load and land as soon as possible

Q

open door

A

if fully open, reduce speed to 87 Kias, close cabin vents, open storm window.

if top latch open, latch
if bottom latch open, open top latch push the door further open and close rapidly. then secure the top latch

a slip in the direction of the open door will assist in the latching procedure

Q

engine roughness

A

turn on carb heat, wait for increase in RPM or decrease in RPM or one minute. then carb off

if engine still too rough, adjust mixture for smoothness, electric fuel pump on, switch fuel tanks to see if fuel contamination the problem.

cycle magnetos

if operation less rough on just one magneto, go to full mixture and land as soon as possible

During Fires
