Special Flight Permit

A

For flying for repairs, alterations, maintenance or for storage.
Delivering or exporting aircraft
Production testing new production aircraft
Evacuating aircraft
To allow operation of overweight aircraft for flight beyond normal range over water or land where adequate landing facilities or fuel is not available

FSDO (Flight Standards District Office) or DAR (Designated Airworthiness Representative) may issue a Special Flight Permit. A FAA inspector may inspect the air craft or require a FAA certificated mechanic to inspect the plane. This inspection must be recored in the aircraft records

Preventative Maintenance

A

Certificated pilot meeting conditions under 14 CFR Part 43:

14 CFR Part 43, Appendix A, Subpart C (list of things owner pilot may do):

  • remove, install, repair landing gear tires
  • service landing gear wheel bearings
  • service landing gear shock struts
  • replace defective safety wire or utter keys
  • lubricate items not requiring disassembly other than remove of nonstructural items (cover plates, cowling, fairings)
  • replenish hydraulic fluid in the hydraulic fluid reservoir
  • apply preservative or protective material to components w/o disassembly and where such coatings is not prohibited or contrary to best practices
  • replace safety belts
  • replace bulbs, reflectors, and lenses of position and landing lights
  • replace or clean spark plugs and set plug gap clearance
  • replace any hose connection except hydra connections
  • replace and service batteries
  • make simple fabric patches
  • replace any cowlings not requiring removal of the propeller or disconnection of flight controls

Flying with Inoperative Equipment

91.213

Equipment Cannot be:

Part of the VFR day type required equipment
indicated as required by the aircraft’s equipment list
indicated as required by the aircraft’s kind of operations list
required by 14 CFR §91.205 or any other rule of 14 CFR part 91

inoperative instruments must be removed/deactivated, placarded and maintenance recorded in accordance with 14 CFR §43.9

A pilot 14 car part 61 must determine that the inoperative instrument or equipment does not constitute a hazard to the aircraft
