Q

Power Failure (General)

A

Caused by engine or drive system failure.

Usually indicated by low RPM warning.

Engine: change in noise level, nose-left yaw, oil pressure light, decreasing engine RPM

Drive System: unusual noise or vibration, nose right or left yaw, decreasing rotor RPM with increasing engine RPM

Immediately lower collective to enter autorotation.

Aft cyclic is required when collective is lowered at high speed.

Do not apply aft cyclic during touchdown or ground slide.

Q

Air Restart Procedure

A

Do not attempt it engine malfunction is suspected or before establishing autorotation.

  1. Mixture Full Rich (Down)
  2. Primer down and locked (if installed)
  3. Close throttle then crack slightly
  4. Actuate starter with left hand

Q

Loss of Tail Rotor Thrust (Forward Flight)

A

Nose-Right Yaw.

  1. Immediately enter autorotation.
  2. Maintain 70+ KIAS.
  3. Select LZ
  4. Roll throttle off into overtravel spring
  5. Perform autorotation landing

Vertical stabilizers may permit controlled flight above 70 KIAS at low power settings, but prior to reducing airspeed enter full autorotation.

17
Q

Tach Failure

A

If either one fails use the other.

If both (or it is unclear which) fail, defer to the governor and land as soon as practical.

18
Q

Governor Failure

A

Switch OFF and complete flight with manual throttle control.

19
Q

Oil Light

A

Loss of oil pressure (and possibly engine power) - check gauge, if confirmed, land immediately.

20
Q

MR Temp Light, MR Chip Light, TR Chip Light

A

If accompanied by any other indication of a problem (noise, vibration, temperature rise), land immediately.

21
Q

Starter On Light

A

If light doesn’t go out when ignition is released, immediately pull mixture OFF and turn the battery OFF

22
Q

Low RPM Light

A

Indicates rotor speed <97% RPM.

Lower collective, roll throttle on, and in forward flight apply aft cyclic.

Note: Light (and horn) are disabled when collective is full-down.

23
Q

CO Light

A

Indicates CO in cabin.

Turn off heater and open vents. Land or transition to forward flight.

If CO poisoning symptoms accompany light, land immediately.

24
Q

Right Roll in Low G

A

Gentle aft cyclic to restore positive G. Then correct roll if necessary.

25
Q

Uncommanded pitch, roll, or yaw from turbulence.

A

Gradual application of controls to:

Maintain rotor RPM
Positive G
Eliminate side slip

Do not over-control.

Depart the area or land as soon as practical.
