What are the three methods of emergency contraception?
A
- Levonelle: inhibits ovulation
- Ella 1: inhibits/delays ovulation
- Copper IUD: toxic to sperm and egg, and anti-implantation

What can each method be used?
A
Levonelle - up to 72 hours
- efficacy decreases over time
- high BMI/enzyme inducers may decrease efficacy
Ella 1 - up to 120hours (5 days)
- no decrease in efficacy over time
- antacids decrease absorption
Copper IUD - up to 120hrs UPSI, up to 5 days after date ovulation
-can be retained for ongoing contraception
