What are the three methods of emergency contraception?

  • Levonelle: inhibits ovulation
  • Ella 1: inhibits/delays ovulation
  • Copper IUD: toxic to sperm and egg, and anti-implantation

What can each method be used?

A

Levonelle - up to 72 hours

  • efficacy decreases over time
  • high BMI/enzyme inducers may decrease efficacy

Ella 1 - up to 120hours (5 days)

  • no decrease in efficacy over time
  • antacids decrease absorption

Copper IUD - up to 120hrs UPSI, up to 5 days after date ovulation
-can be retained for ongoing contraception
