A

• Amateurs still didn’t get paid to play
• Due to growth of northern teams it led to broken-time payments — working men are payed for missing work in order to play
• This payment technique was against the amateurs principles

•Women were still expected to marry and have children and become financially dependent on their husbands
• schooling for girls were still limited however for boys it wasn’t
• Late 19th century women’s status changed due to the mortality rate of men
• Lots of female pioneers emerged meaning women tried to gain equal rights, work, vote and own property

A

• More defined laws and order had an affect on the type of activities that were played
• Due to law changes blood sports declined for lower class but upper class still played whatever sports they wanted to
• Laws were made to benefit middle & upper class citizens

A

• Due to revolution the need to keep the masses under control and less powerful & education
• The education act (1870) was the beginning of the modern system of education in England
• Education became more accessible to the lower class which made and allowed more sophisticated rules in sports

How did the availability of time and money change in post industrial britain?

A

• Factory owners saw that sports can keep their workers fit and healthy
• Due to the growth in factories the working hours were long and the pay was poor
• Saturdays were made half days which allowed sports to take place
• Factory owners saw the workers as more effective when happier so some owners would pay for an annual trip to the seaside
