A pattern which emerges soley from numerous lower level components of a system. The rules only following local information.

A set of rules, like a recipe.
How is computational modelling a tool for understanding complex systems
IN synthetic psychology insights are gained into complex looking behaviour by starting with the simplest idea and adding to it until the observed behaviour is similar.
What does complexity emerge from
Simple recursive algorithms
WHat is emergence
The idea that simple things with lots of local interactions can appear complex. For instance the formation of ants to cross a gap, there is no global knowledge just lots of simple interactions, but together they have collective intelligence.
