Embryonic development Flashcards
what is the 1st trimester?
embryonic stage; all organ systems form, but remain rudimentary; the biggest risk of congenital deformities occurs during this trimester
what is the second trimester?
beginning of the fetal stage; maturation of all organ systems
what does the zygote enter immediately after fertilization?
cleavage
what has been produced from the cleavage process?
blastomeres
what is day 0?
fertilization
first cleavage division
what is day 1?
2-cell stage
what is day 2?
4-cell stage
what is day 3?
early morula
solid ball of blastomeres
what is day 4?
advanced morula
reaches uterus
What is day 6?
blastocyst
consists of inner cell mass and trophoblast
what is day 7-10?
implantation in uterine wall
what is inner cell mass?
cells destined to form embryo
what is trophoblast?
the outer layer of cells
develops into supporting structures for embryo
what is blastocele?
inner hollow space
what is the epiblast?
blastodisc layer facing amniotic cavity
what is hypoblast?
blastodisc layer facing blastocele
what used to be the epiblast layer?
ectoderm
what used to be the hypoblast layer?
endoderm
what is the new layer between the epiblast and hypoblast layers?
mesoderm
What contains maternal blood?
intervillous space
what does the ectoderm develop into?
all nervous tissue
what does the mesoderm develop into?
all skeletal and cardiac muscle
what does the endoderm develop into?
thymus gland, thyroid gland, pancreas, digestive tract, urinary bladder, liver
what is the amnion?
forms inner sac around embryo, holds the amniotic fluid in which embryo floats
what is the chorion?
forms the outermost membrane around the fetus and an embryonic portion of the placenta
what is the site of early blood formation?
yolk sac
what forms part of the umbilical cord and part of the urinary bladder?
allantosis
what do the umbilical arteries carry?
deoxygenated blood from fetus to placenta
what is the fetal portion of the placenta?
chorion
what does the umbilical vein carry?
carries blood rich in oxygen and nutrients to the fetus
what conducts about half of incoming blood to vena cava, bypassing the liver?
Ductus venosus
what shunts blood coming from the left atrium to the right atrium, bypassing the pulmonary circulation?
Foramen ovale
what does the ductus arteriosus do?
further shunts blood away from the lung by conducting blood from pulmonary trunk into aorta
what carries deoxygenated and waste-laden blood from the fetus back to the placenta?
umbilical arteries
what is the foramen ovale visible as?
Fossa ovalis
what does the ductus arteriosus become?
ligamentum arteriosum
what do the umbilical arteries become?
medial umbilical ligaments
what doe the umbilical vein become?
ligamentum teres (round ligament) of liver
what does the ductus venosus become?
ligamentum venosum
