Embryology/histology Flashcards
Embryology
Study of the formation and development of an embryo and fetus
Prenatal
The process of growth and development within the womb throughout the stages before birth
Conception
Union of the male sperm and female ovum aka fertilization
Gestation
Stage of human development that starts at fertilization and ends at birth
Germinal period
Stage of development that occurs during the first week after fertilization
Zygote
Fertilized egg
Meiosis
Reproductive cell production that ensures the correct number of chromosomes
Embryonic period
Stage of human development that occurs from the beginning of the 2nd week to the end of the 8th week (3rd-8th weeks)
Embryo
An organism in the earliest stages of development
Fetal period
Stage of human development that starts at the beginning of the 9th week and ends at birth
Fetus
An embryonic human from 2 months after conception to birth
Stomodeum
Depression in the ectoderm of the oral region of a young embryo which develops into the mouth and oral cavity (primitive mouth)
Odontogenesis
Process by which teeth form from embryonic cells, grow, and erupt into the mouth
Dental lamina
Thickened band of oral epithelium that follows the curve of each developing arch
Ameloblasts
Epithelial cells which form enamel
Odontoblasts
Peripheral cells of dental papilla which form dentin
Cementoblasts
Inner cells of dental sac which form cementum
Enamel organ
Part of a developing tooth designed to produce enamel
Deposition
The process by which the body adds new bone
Resorption
The body’s processes of eliminating existing bone or hard tissue structure
Osteoblasts
Cells that form bone
Osteoclasts
Cells that resorb bone
Modeling
bone changes that involves deposition and resorption of bone and occur along articulations as they increase in size and shape to keep up with the growth of surrounding tissues AKA displacement
Remodeling
growth and change in shape of existing bone and involves deposition and resorption of bone
