Embryology Flashcards
Anterior pituitary
From oral ectoderm via Rathke’s pouch
Posterior pituitary
From neural crest ectoderm - extension of primordial diencephalon
Thyroid
From endodermal thyroid diverticulum, arising from the cleft between the 1st and 2nd pharyngeal pouches
Calcitonin-secreting C cells are from neural crest ectodermal origin via the ultimobranchial body
Parathyroids
From the cleft between the 3rd and 4th pharyngeal arches (inferior) and the cleft just after the 4th pharyngeal arch (superior)
Adrenal Cortex
Mesodermally derived from cells between the dorsal mesentery of the gut and the urogenital ridge
Adrenal Medulla
Ectodermally derived from neural crest cells via primordial sympathetic ganglia
