embryo research, cloning & designer babies Flashcards
1
Q
embryo research & cloning overview
A
- embryo refers to earliest stage of human development & after 3months its a foetus
- embryo research is where scientists extract ‘embryonic stem cells’ from human embryos left from IVF
- human embryo research done as animal embryos not sufficiently compatible to be used in research for humans
- cloning is name given to process by which scientists make biological duplicates of an organism
- man ethical issues - can’t open it without destroying embryo & they play god
2
Q
two types of cloning
A
- reproductive - leads to physical clone
- therapeutic - embryo used for stem cells & used for research only
3
Q
stem cell research pro/con
A
pro - combats disease like parkinsons, study effects of chemicals on human tissue, regenerative meds
cons - manipulative/exploitive of embryo, embryo completely destroyed, some think its murder
4
Q
cloning pro/con
A
pro - helps people have kids, another way of using cells for cures, saviour sibling
con - reproductive cloning results in father being twin to kid, takes away human dignity, no consent
5
Q
nml
A
- strongly oppose embryo research a contradicts precepts of reproduction, ordered society & worship god
- as soon as fertilisation occurs, they’re classed as humans
- ‘before i formed you in the womb i knew you’ shows god fashions each person in the womb
- designer babies go against worshipping god as humans wouldn’t be created in god’s image (image dei)
6
Q
situation ethics
A
- fletcher said that in the future we may live in a world that has more diseases and we might need to speed up evolution so designer babies may be needed
- human beings function is being designers and makers so surely we’re fulfilling our purpose by using science to do this
- survivor siblings may be right to some but not to others
- doesn’t pose moral concerns as is only a potential person as has no possibility to communicate
