Q

State the beginning

A

-First the author describes the narrators innocent and imaginative nature at the beginning of the story.
-Each night she looks out her bedroom window at the airport and fantasises about flying.
-To her the airport was the equivalent to the “ mecca “ and to “ jerusalem “.
-The metaphor indicates that she worships the airport.
-Just as Jerusalem is a sanctuary and the most special of places for christmas so to the airport is a place she believes in sacred.
-It shows how juvenile she is and the devotion she holds for flying.
-This creates an interesting character as it illustrates the imaginary world she lives in and her ignorance of the world around her.
-It highlights a child’s mindset and their ability to dream.

Q

Describe the turning point

A
  • Next the author goes on to explain the turning point.
  • The narrator is invited to a birthday party at the cinema to see snow white.
  • Before the film, a propaganda movie is played where a man is brutally shot.
  • The narrator is clearly traumatised and can’t help but run to the bathroom and “ vomit cake and ice cream “.
These are two huge symbols of her childhood so the symbolism here is very effective as it.clarifies how impactful it is for her to throw this up as she is having her inocencence drained out of her in a violent manner.
  • Then as the narrator goes home that night she struggled to get to sleep and instead of dreaming of superman instead the prison camp sprang to life in her mind.
  • From this we can deduce that she has lost the ability to dream like a child as now she has been exposed to the real horror of the world.
The personification i. this quote indicated how prominent this dream is as it is at the forefront of her mind and is so vivid that it appears as soon as she shuts her eyes.
This creates an interesting character as it illustrates the direct contrast between her juvenile superman dream to this brutal violent dream since the movie

Decribe the incident

A

next the author describes the pinnacle incident . this happened when the narrator is playing with Paula Brown and her friends playing tag. dreading the game, pull up and falls and rinse her brand-new snowsuit. She got for her birthday and the children all “deliberate “ blame the narrator. We can infer from this how quick the narrators friends turn on her. The word choice suggests that children are intentionally blaming her and using her as a scapegoat. This is the start of a realisation that even the people closest to you can be nasty and can be cruel and can turn on you . The narrators eventually begins to run away in today “cold “ and “raw “night. This pathetic fallacy is a really useful tool as it reflects her sad and betrayed emotions. This creates an interesting character represents the narrators in a dilemma as she learns to navigate the cruelty of the real world and her further realisation that Eve and her friends can be cruel, making her out to be the imposter

Q

Climax

A

then the author writes about the climax and the story. The soakers, when the narrator arrives home to find, even her own, Uncle and Mum, don’t believe her and are choosing to buy Paula, a new snow suit, the narrator can’t control her newfound emotions and ends up, lashing out with her words, sounding like “dry seeds “. This is an affective simile as it suggests her words didn’t have the intended effect. Just as dry seeds are ineffective, so to her words, lack empathy and sound unremorseful, unlike their intended purpose. She then goes to her room only to see her uncle Frank standing in the corridor, except “his face was featureless “. that expression showcases the trust that is lost between them. She is now unable to recognise him and the way she has perceives him has entirely changed. This is yet another thing that has been stolen from her and it highlights that even the way she viewed her uncle, has reflected herloss of innocence.
this creates an interesting character as it is clear. She is struggling with all these new conflicting emotions. She doesn’t know how to deal with. She is also clearly feeling betrayed in every aspect of her life further causing her to grow up.
