What does OVM stand for?
Operation Vigilant Mariner
How many conditions are there and when are they set?
Four.
OVM 1: Set in transiting designated choke points within 12 nautical miles of land. When under attack or when the Mission Commander/ATTWO deems necessary.
OVM 2: Set during transits exceeding 6 hours in length, birth shifts extended anchorages, or when the MC/ATTWO deems necessary.
OVM 3: Will be set while operating in open waters, outside of 12 nautical miles from land, or when the threat of a small boat attack is deemed less likely by the Commander of the AOR.
OVM 4: Inport force protection watches will be set in accordance with the ship’s FP plan and current threat guidance.
What does “Quickdraw” mean?
Set OVM condition 1
What are the flares used on an EST? What are their ranges?
LA-51 (100 yards),
LA-52 (200 yards),
BA-26 (300 yards).
Who has weapon release authority on a EST?
Mission Commander/ATTWO
What are the six (6) criteria for warning shots?
- Open water
- From a crew served weapon or rifle
- From a qualified personnel
- When clear field of fire exists
- From tactical direction from competent authority
- When all lesser means have been exhausted or cannot be reasonably employed.
What logs do the Chief of the Guard (COG) maintain?
Armory and COG log.
What is a COI and a CCOI (who dictates)?
Contact of Interest, Critical Contract of Interest. The ATTWO dictates.
Can you re-link ammo so your first 10 rounds are tracers?
No. Only the QUASO can. Can order cans with first 10 rounds as tracers.
What is SCOF? What are the levels?
Seward Continuum of Force.
SCOF 1: Roll CPED, Bridge to Bridge, 5 short blasts of ship whistle, hand and arm signals, LRAD, Spot light, LA-9P.
SCOF 2: Level 2 warning, LA-51/52’s/BA-26’s, TRACON.
SCOF 3: Level 3 warning, warning shots.
SCOF 4: Destructive/Disabling Fire.
What is dead space? How can you remedy it?
Areas that cannot be engaged with a crew serve weapon mount. Utilize mobile m240’s.
How many queries? How many warnings?
One (1) query. Two (2) Warnings.
What are NPZ, what are the ranges?
Naval Protective Zones (Out to sea).
Assessment 1000 yards - the horizon
Warning 300 to 1000 yards
Threat 0 to 300 yards
What instruction relieves the shipmaster of Tactical Control (TACON) of the ship?
U.S. Navy Article 0847 and Comsec Washington D.C.
Escalation of Force Continuum?
- Verbal Warnings over BTB VHF radio
- Five short blast of ship’s whistle
- Verbal Warnings over outside 1MC speakers and LRAD.
- Utilize LA-9/P
- Launch flares/LA51/LA52
- Warning shots fired
- Fire at threat to stop threat from continuing its hostile action
