platelet transfusion is indicated in anyone whose platelet count is
less than 5,000/mm3
platelet transfusion is indicated in those with plt <10,000 if there’s
therepy-induced thrombocytopenia (e.g. chemotherapy)
platelet transfusion is indicated in those with plt <20,000 if there’s
a coagulation disorder
or low-risk procedure (including central line placement)
platelet transfusion is indicated in those with plt <50,000 if there’s
active bleeding,
lumbar puncture,
or major surgery
platelet transfusion is indicated in those with plt <100,000 if there’s
neurologic surgery,
ophthalmologic surgery,
intracranial hemorrhage, or
major multisystem trauma
platelets are generally not indicated for
ITP, TTP, or HIT,
except in the context of ongoing severe bleeding
