  1. Criminal is to maintain law and order to protect society and civil is to uphold the rights of individuals
  2. Legal name of person in criminal law is prosector and in civil it is claimant
  3. Powers of the court in criminal is prison or fine and in civil it is to award damages

Common- unwritten law that has been developed by judicial decisions

Statute- laws created by parliament in an act of parliament

Summary offences- minor offences- magistrates court e.g assualt

Either way offence- middle range offences- magistrates or crown e.g ABH

Indictable offences- serious offences- crown court e.g murder
