Differences between norms and behaviours and laws
A
- Norms of behaviour can develop over time whereas laws can change instantly
- Norms of behaviour ought to be obeyed however laws must be obeyed

A
- Criminal is to maintain law and order to protect society and civil is to uphold the rights of individuals
- Legal name of person in criminal law is prosector and in civil it is claimant
- Powers of the court in criminal is prison or fine and in civil it is to award damages

Custom- rule that develops in community
Common- unwritten law that has been developed by judicial decisions
Statute- laws created by parliament in an act of parliament
Case law helps to shape laws

Summary offences- minor offences- magistrates court e.g assualt
Either way offence- middle range offences- magistrates or crown e.g ABH
Indictable offences- serious offences- crown court e.g murder
