Ella Science Flashcards
What is kinetic energy?
An energy that is associated with motion e.g. a motor.
Do good conductors have a low resistance to electricity?
Yes
What is an electron?
A negatively charged particle.
What is a load?
Something that uses electricity.
What is a voltage?
A force that pushes electrons around a circuit.
What two types of energy are produced when a light bulb lights up?
Heat energy and light energy.
What is a solution?
Two of more substances in the same phase. E.g.Liquid with liquid or gas with gas or solid with solid.
How do you separate salt and water?
Evaporation of water
How do you separate Ethanol and water?
Distillation. Ethanol will evaporate first. Ethanol boils at 78 degrees while water need 100.
What is matter?
Stuff-anything that has mass. E.g. air, oxygen, nitrogen, book, computer.
Is light matter?
Light is not matter as it is movement of python-energy
Is it hard to take apart a solid object?
Yes, it is as it is hard to take apart a solid shape as it is stuck together by forces. Instead of breaking, it would want to vibrate in place instead as it spreads the damage around.
Can a solid be able to flow or compressed?
No, it can’t
How much attraction from the particles does liquid have?
Liquid is going to have some attraction between the particles.
Is liquid in a fixed position?
No
Does gravity pull the particles of a liquid to form the shape?
Yes it is.
Is the volume of the liquid fixed?
Yes, it is.
Can liquid flow?
Yes it can.
Can liquid be compressed
It is possible with the right materials.
How does the gas particles react to each other?
They will spread as far apart as possible from each other.
Does gas occupy the whole area available to it?
Yes it will.
Does the gasses volume change?
Yes it will. It will change accordingly to the shape and size of the container.
Can gas be compressed
Gas can be compressed and purified.
What is water when frozen?
Ice
How does ice turn into water?
Heat energy transforms into kinetic energy which would make the ice turn into water.
What is distillation?
Distillation is we heat the different types of oil to separate the liquids. Can be used to make plane fuel if you heat up different parts of the crude oil.
What is solid to gas?
Sublimation
What is solid to liquid?
melting
What is liquid to gas?
evaporation
What is gas to Solid?
deposition
What is gas to liquid
Condensation
What is liquid to solid
Freezing
What is the smallest substance
Atom
What does a group of Atoms form?
molecule
What are the ways to get things physically separated?
Sifting, floatation-water in cup, magnetism, filtration, decanting
What does Homogeneous mean?
The particles of a mixture are spread evenly throughout one another and can’t easily be distinguished
What does Heterogeneous mean?
The particles of a mixture are not spread evenly.
What does Saturation mean?
It means that there is no more space to put more in. E.g. Once you put enough sugar into the water. It would eventually be unable to fit anymore in.
What is a Suspension?
A mixture that is formed when it doesn’t dissolve and is only cloudy after mixing-heterogenous. It will eventually sink or float.
What is a Colloid?
a mixture that is formed when a suspension does not separate or settle. E.g.-toothpaste in water.
What is an Emulsion?
a mixture that is formed of two or more liquids spread evenly through one another-Salad dressing when shaken together (the liquid oil is spread out throughout the liquid vinegar)
What are Immiscible liquids?
liquids that cannot mix well. -oil and water
