Who was a physician?
Were licensed doctors who had gone to university. The physicians charged high prices.
Who were the Barber surgeons?
They were surgeons who often combined the task with that of a barber. People saw no reason that those who cut hair would not be able to carry out amputation of limbs.
Who were the apothecaries?
The people who prepared medicine for the Physicians as well as selling their own directly to patients.
Who were the Mid-wife’s?
They were the people who helped women during child birth.
What were some of the beliefs influencing medical practice?
Astrology- They would look at the moon and stars to decide when it was best to treat a patient.
Divine Punishment – Illness was often seen as punishment from God.
The Four Humors – Based on Hippocrates and Galen, doctors believed health depended on balancing blood, phlegm, black bile, and yellow bile. Treatments included bloodletting and purging.
