The country was seen as weak in terms of power. France and spain were strong and both Catholic

1559
A plot to march down south from durham (after taking over the cathedral) and join spanish reinforcements in order to seize london and overthrow Elizabeth. Putting Mary QoS in her place.
What were the main events of the revolt of the Northern Earls
Rebels took Durham and held a full Catholic mass. They reached leeds but many nobles stayed loyal to Elizabeth and they were forced to retreat. Hundreds of rebels executed.
What was the significance of the revolt of the Northern Earls
First serious revolt over Elizabeth but the power and control of the Northern Earls ended. Elizabeth excommunicated from the Catholic Church
Why were there initial problems between Spain and England
Elizabeth was a protestant and refused the Spanish king’s offer of marriage.

Worsened relations between England and Spain as he stole large amounts and was knighted by Elizabeth.

The treaty was an alliance between France and Spain and Elizabeth felt she could not avoid war anymore. Signed treaty of Nonsuch in support of Dutch rebels.

What was the importance of Drake’s raid on Cadiz
The ‘singeing of the king of spains beard’ destroyed many ships and freshwater supplies in the new world and largely delayed an attack by the spanish.
