- incurred the wrath of the protestant lords and the English through her marriage to the earl of Darnley, Mary being implicated in her husband’s murder
- A subsequent third marriage to Earl of Bothwell set off a brief civil war with MQS fleeing to England in 1567
- Some English saw her as rightful monarch as a catholic leader, causing her to be the focus of plots to overthrow Elizabeth, 1585 Parry plot to assassinate queen, 1586 Babington to assassinate queen.
- Elizabeth delayed decision by 4 months as she feared her own security by killing the monarch

Northern Rebellion
A
1569, lead by Earl of Northumberland and Westmorland.
- held underlying religious motives, also political- were dishonoured by being displaced from their traditional aristocratic role of controlling northern government.
- also caused by Elizabeth’s volcanic response to Norfolk and MQS marriage, wanted to restore Scottish throne
- besieged crown stronghold Barnad Castle
- yet upon news of incoming crown force, earls disbanded their forces and fled to Scotland
- Failed due to lack of foreign support, poor leadership and decisive action from Elizabeth
- lands of rebel leaders were forfeited to the crown and a mass execution of rebels was ordered
