Bishop Jewel publishes The Apology of the Church of England

-Tried to show that the Protestant faith wasn’t heretical
by answering the criticisms of Catholics
-Argued that there was nothing wrong with catholic doctrine but it was the Catholic Church was had corrupted the purity of scripture
-Claimed that man could only be saved by faith and not good works
Publication of 39 Articles

- Basis of doctrine and theology in Church
- Transubstantiation was not allowed and justification was by faith alone
- Priests had to be subscribed to the articles by 1571 or their livings were taken away

- Elizabeth established as governor of the Church in England. Appeased to extreme Protestants who believed that a woman couldn’t be the head of the church.
- Gave Catholic’s a chance to believe that the Pope was the head of the church. Although English Catholic’s showed more loyalty to Elizabeth
- 14 Bishops originally refused and were removed from their sees
Act of Uniformity

- Everyone had to attend church each week or was charged 12d (a considerable sum for the poor)
- Established the 1549 Book of Common Prayer as the official doctrine for the Church but with two sentences about the Black Rubric and communion removed
- Also included what clergy should wear and church decoration instructions

Royal Injunctions enforce new religious settlement

- Established the pattern of worship and attacking some Catholic practices but ensuring continutity were possible
- No pilgrimages
- No monuments to ‘supposed miracles’
- Preachers to hold a license and have to have a Master’s from Oxford or Cambridge (this left a lot of priests reliant on Books of Homilies to get their sermons, because they had to make 15 sermons a year)
- Clergy had to observe the Royal Supremacy and preach against superstition and the papal supremacy
- Priests could only marry with permission of their bishop and two justices of the peace (Elizabeth hated clerical marriage)
Commissioners and injunctions
- As part of the injunctions 125 commissioners were sent to churches and to enforce the oath of supremacy
- Greater destruction of images and 400 Marian clergy lost their livings

- France would pacify the Scottish border, causes a problem in 1559 when the French try to garrison the borders but there is a protestant uprising
- Resulting in Scottish Protestants asking Elizabeth for help
