A tracked weight which is suspended from cables and moves within the
guide rails along the hoistway walls. The counterweight will be equal to the weight of the
elevator car plus 40 percent of the anticipated live load. (passengers)

Q

Constructed within the hoistway, an elevator car consists of a cage of light
metal or metal supported plywood panels within a heavy steel frame. This frame includes a
SAFETY PLANK which forms the bottom and the CROSSHEAD from which an elevator car is
usually suspended. The ELEVATOR CAR DOOR moves with the car.

Q

A keyhole in the HOISTWAY DOOR that accepts a LUNAR KEY
which is used to trip the hoistway door release. Generally, only the top and/or bottom hoistway doors have this feature

Q

A shaft that encompasses the elevator car, generally serving all floors in
buildings of modest height. In high rise buildings exceeding about 20 stories, the elevator
hoistways may be BANKED with one bank serving only the lower floors and one or more banks which serve only intermediate or top floors. The elevator cars in upper banks will travel in a BLIND HOISTWAY until they reach the designated levels they serve. A blind hoistway has no hoistway doors on the lower floors not served by the elevator car.

Q

The hoistway door locks, called INTERLOCKS because of their electrical and
mechanical interconnection. In normal operation the car cannot move until all interlocks are closed.

A hoistway door opening device which is inserted into the escutcheon tube and
turned or pulled down to trip the release mechanism. An assortment of Lunar Keys are carried by Squad One and all Truck companies.

Generally located above the hoistway. However, there are exceptions
which are covered under “ELEVATOR TYPES”. A machine room generally contains a hoisting
machine, a controller, a motor generator and speed generator. The main electrical disconnect is also housed in this room

Q

A mode of operation activated either by smoke detectors or the KEY RECALL
SWITCH, and results in the return of all cars (except those out of service or in independent
service) to the designated level, usually the lobby.( see PHASE 1 OPERATION in PART
THREE of this bulletin )

Q

A steady beam of light shown between the Hoistway and Car
doors, horizontally at about knee level. This light beam is sent to a receiving unit and is designed to stop the closing motion of the doors when the beam is broken, and immediately reverse the doors until they are fully open. This feature is overridden when the car is in PHASE TWO operation.

Q

A set of three wheels that roll against the guide rails. Roller guides usually
mount to both the safety plank and the crosshead, one set on either end of each beam. These guides keep the car in contact with the guide rails and prevent sway or lateral movement

Q

A motion sensing device, such as a frangible bulb, installed on the
Machine Room wall which renders a car inoperable. Seismic devices are required on all traction installations constructed after 7-1-93 where the speed of the car is greater than 150 feet per minute. These devices should only be reset by an elevator technician. If activated, it is an indication that the installation may be unsafe. i.e. counterweights out of their track, loosened mounting bolts, etc

Q

To give you some idea as to the stopping distance, a car whose rated speed is up to 125 feet per
minute should, in free fall, stop within one foot three inches. A car rated to 500 feet per minute
would stop within five feet eight inches. Elevator cars that have a rating of 1500 feet per minute
could require up to forty feet to stop.

Q

The ____ is usually an old installation and has a large drum in the motor room upon which the hoisting ropes and counterweight ropes are wound. This type of elevator is not used in tall buildings because it would require an extremely large drum size which would not be practical

Q

Hydraulic Type Elevators are found in two different forms; ____The ___ is the most common and involves the elevator car mounted on top of a long hydraulic piston, just like a jack

A

The Plunger Type and the Cable Type, Plunger Type

17
Q

Hydraulic Type Elevators are generally limited to ___ in rise

A

sixty feet

18
Q

The most common type of elevator is the ____. This type employs a driving
sheave, or pulley with multiple grooves, over which pass the hoisting ropes that lead from the elevator car to the counterweights. The ___ provides many safety features, permits multiple hoisting ropes and allows for installation in buildings of any height.

A

Electric Traction type

19
Q

When communicating from a Machine Room,___ are preferable to portable radios due to interference with digital controllers in the newer elevator installations.

A

fire phones

20
Q

REPAIRS TO AND REACTIVATION OF
ELEVATORS ____CARRIED OUT BY MEMBERS OF THE FIRE BUREAU

A

21
Q

The three most common reasons why an elevator will become stalled in a hoistway are:

A

Power failure, malfunction of control components, activation of safety EQT

22
Q

If emergency power is not available, the Main shut off switch to the affected elevator should be opened to prevent any unexpected movement. ANY TIME IT IS NECESSARY TO REMOVE PASSENGERS THIS SWITCH SHOULD BE OPENED AND ___ FIRST.

A

LOCKED

23
Q

If passengers are required to be removed before the arrival of elevator personnel, it should be done with extreme caution. Remember to always ____ in the machine room before attempting any method of passenger removal

A

shut off the main power disconnect

24
Q

DO NOT RESTART AN ELEVATOR WITHOUT_____

A

CONSULTING AN ELEVATOR TECHNICIAN.

25
Q

If the car is located more than ___ feet above a landing level, it is inadvisable to remove the passengers through the elevator door opening as the excessive distance between the car floor and landing level creates a danger due to the possibility that a passenger may fall into the hoistway.

A

26
Q

The responsibility of Lobby Control is to place the buildings elevators into___

A

Phase One operation

27
Q

During fire situations, continually checking the __ for smoke conditions is imperative.

A

hoistway

28
Q

Also, remember that if you find yourself in a car which overshoots its destination, and is heading for the fire floor, you can break the electrical interlock by prying the car doors apart with a ___

A

Halligan or other pry tool
