Initial Rescue Operations
Those operations that can be accomplished by initial fire companies and do not require confined space rescue training.
How far from the landing does the car have to be to require permit for confined space?
18” from the landing.
Initial response companies can affect a response when the car is less than how many inches from the landing?
Car has to be less than 18 inches from the landing.
What notifications must be made for confined space rescues in an elevator shaft or an incident with injuries?
On duty Shift Commander, closest BC, on duty Safety Officer, and Spec Ops Chief.
Who is responsible for making the necessary notifications?
The on duty communications officer.
What is the minimum equipment required for an elevator rescue
Interlock release key (ladder company) and two(2) radios.
What is the first step when you arrive on scene?
Determine if elevator maintenance company has been notified. If not, have dispatch contact the company.
What are the initial actions to be taken after communicating with passengers?
Power on? Emergency Stop button? All doors closed? Attempt Phase 1 recall.
How many FF sent to complete lockout/tagout?
2 FF with radios sent to machine room for lockout/tagout. Remain until incident completed.
When can a FF enter the elevator car?
After power off and ensuring elevator is no more than 18 inches from landing.
