What is covalent bonding ?

A
  • When non-metallic elements react is it not energetically flavourable to form ions - electrons are shared between the atoms of the elements to form compounds.
  • The resulting compounds is more stable than the individual elements.

Q

How are the atoms in a simle covalent bonds? and some properties

A
  • There is an electrostatic attraction between the positive nuclei of the 2 atoms and the shared pair of electrons in the bond.
  • elements and compounds with a simple molecular structure have relatively low melting and boiling point
  • there is no charged particles, covalent simple molecules do not conduct electricity
  • they mostly do not dissolve readily in water

Q

what is the electron pair repulsion theory usuing methane compound:

A
  • In ch4 there are four groups of electrons around the central carbon atom which are bonded by four covalent bondings pairs.
  • The bond angle of H-C-H are 109.5 this is because the shape of the compound is tetrahedral with the hydrogen atoms bonded around central carbon arranged themselves to minimise the repulsion

Q

What is the formula to calculate amount in moles (n) (mol)?

A

Moles = Mass (M) (g) / Molar mass (M) (gmol-1)

17
Q

what is the formula and the unit for the calcium nitrate?

A
  • one ion = Ca2+
  • another ion = NO3-
  • the compound is Ca(NO3)2
18
Q

what do you have to do to work out one mole of a substance

A

Divide the substance by the avogadro constant ( 6.02x1023)

19
Q

what is the value of gas in room temperature ?

A

-24cm3

( only if it ask you in room temperature)

20
Q

Define molacular formula using ethane in simplest ratio:

-emprirical formula

A
  • Molacular formula tells you the actual number of different types of atom
  • the molacular formula of ethane is C2H6 but simplest ratio for the moles of atom C:H is 1:3 = CH3 ( calculation from percentage masses ) (emperical formula )
21
Q

What is the formula and systematic name of the hydraded salt ?

A
  • CuSO4.5H2O
  • copper (ii) sulfate
22
Q

what is water of crystallisation?

talk about the crystals appearence , giving an example

A
  • The crystals of some lattices include molecules of water.
  • These water molecules are fitted within the lattice in regular manner which is called water crystallisation
  • the crystals are said to be hydrated
eg Hydrated copper(ii) sulfate and is blue coloured
23
Q

explain CuSO4 ( anhydous ) form of copper(ii) sulfate

the cause and appearence

A
  • when hydrated crystals are heated the water of crystallisation is removed as steam leaving the anhydrous solid
eg. CuSO4 is the amhydrous from copper (ii) sulfate which is in White colour
24
Q

What is theoretical yield?

A

When the mole can also be used to calculate the expected amount of product in reaction carried out under ideal conditions.

25
Q

What are the factors that can reduce the amount of products produced:

5 reasons

A
  1. loss of products from reation vessels, particularly if there are several stages to the reaction
  2. side-reations occuring, producing unwanted by-products
  3. impurities in the reactants
  4. changes in temperature and pressure
  5. if the reation is an equallibrium system
26
Q

What is the formula to find percentage yield?

A

percentage yield=( actual yield / theoretical yield ) x 100

27
Q
A
